The Allies’ ill-conceived response to the rising tide of Turkish nationalism coupled with a wait and see attitude to the events of the Greek-Turkish War exacerbated the humanitarian and diplomatic crisis unfolding around the Mediterranean. While life got back to normal in Europe after the signing of the Treaty of Versailles in 1919, Smyrna offered a tragic reminder that war continued in the East. This paper analyzes the significance of the burning of Smyrna in September 1922 as a crucial final chapter of the Great War. ![]()
